Something else that made this book strange was the frequent switching between past-tense and present-tense narration, and how often there are poorly-written parts of the main character Suzy's narration like: "I know some things about bats. I know that bats are the only mammal that can fly, because that is something I learned in a book." and "Instead, you whisper to me, 'Who do you like?' I don't know what to say. Even if that were the thing I wanted to talk about, there are lots of possible answers. I like Fluffernutter. I like you. I like Aaron. I like my mom and dad, even if I am mad at them for getting divorced. I like the woodpecker that knocks against the tree outside my window. I like the moon when it's a thin crescent and looks like a cartoon drawing of a closed eye, as if the sky were winking." OH. MY. GOODNESS. WHY do we need all of these overly detailed, unnecessary descriptions of things you like, Suzy? Answer: we don't, and all of the many paragraphs like this could (and should) have been edited out of the book! Here are some other things that parents might want to know about this book: EDUCATIONAL VALUE (4/5)- There is a lot of information about jellyfish, and a lot of random science facts. VIOLENCE AND SCARINESS (4/10)- Suzy's friend drowned. There is some information about a poisonous jellyfish and what it's like to be stung by one. Death is talked about and thought about frequently. Why I'm saying 4/10 for violence and scariness is because of a scene where a frog is killed by a few elementary schoolers. . Here is the scene: "It's a frog. They're hurling it back and forth at each other. Stop. I think that, although I do not speak." And "He grins and looks at the frog in his hand. He turns toward a tree. No, no, no. It's a birch tree. White bark. It's just a few feet away from him. Please. Please do not do what I think you are going to do. He lifts his arm. I suck in my breath. No." "He releases the frog. There is a half second where the frog flies through the air- ridiculously, cartoonishly- and then there is a noise, a terrible noise. It is both a thud and a splat, both wet and dry. It is the worst noise I have ever heard." (this scene goes from page 157 to 159) DRINKING, DRUGS, AND SMOKING (1/10)- A dad drinks a beer a couple of times. WHAT AGE CAN A KID READ IT? I said eleven and up because the disturbing themes and situations in this book are not told in a way that feels appropriate for younger kids. Older kids might enjoy the simple writing style and be able to relate to Suzy. In conclusion, The Thing About Jellyfish is an unusual, disappointing book that is OK for older tweens.
