The plot would go past some kid's heads, and create strong emotions in others. It really should have been a PG-13 rated movie, but it is believed that the rating board assumed that because it was animated, and based on the tv series, that they didn't look into it as much as they should, and after controversy created by this movie, they started to look more closely at animated films. However Batman is a good role model. He teaches viewers that killing and revenge is never the answer, as he tries to save his biggest enemy, The Joker, from The Phantasm. He also teaches the importance of keeping promises, and even touches on being responsible. Batman even is seen at his parents’ grave-site talking to the headstone and begging them for their acceptance to allow him to stop being batman so he can be with the woman he loves. The line he says here always gets me, and could be a good talk with your kids over what this means: "I need to be different now. I didn't see this coming; I didn't count on being happy". Deep stuff, and perfectly captures the tone this entire movie is going for, it also goes deep into Batman's personality and character development. A line like this can be very sad for kids, so again, you need to decide if this style of a movie is good for your child. I think that your child should be at least 12 or 13 before he or she watches this film, it's dark, somber, deals with death, and has some scary scenes with both the Joker and the Phantasm, and even a scary showdown between the now framed Batman and the police that try to kill him. It really is a good movie for older kids (12 or 13 at least), but not a good choice for younger children. So when you see the PG on the back of the box, just remember this: it really should have been rated PG-13.
