The ending isn't an unrealistic "tie it up with a bow" ending where everyone gets what they want but it is complex and still happy and satisfying. More sensitive kids may still find it sad. This is a great story that centers around a diverse group of young people and their fun and multi-dimensional friendships. There is a mix of gender, ethnicity, and even health condition. (One character has an enlarged heart and requires daily medication. They all do their part to remind him to take it.) They have different personalities and some conflicts but they work through them with respect and take personal responsibility for their part in the conflict. We appreciated that the story showed the female character being the logical one and that the young boys were portrayed as being comfortable expressing affection for one another; like a brotherhood. They work through conflicts with each other in a mature way that is good modeling for younger viewers and the film also touches on the inequity between rich people and the working miners in a way that is understandable, brief, and not over-bearing to the rest of the plot which focuses on treasuring genuine friendships and having adventures together. A lot of the films for our son's age (9+) seem to rely on the fast high intense action. Whilst this one does have some threats that affect the characters it has a pretty good pace that doesn't rely on quick editing and constant action to drive the story. It focuses more on them being whole complex people not afraid to express their emotions and take care of each other.
