Most of the violence is not too graphic however, like when someone is shot, the most you'll see is a little blood from the mouth or a little blood from the wound. Someone gets a spear stabbed through their body in a mostly slapstick fight where Indiana Jones fights off a group of ninjas or something. Indy and Marion are lowered into a pit of poisonous snakes. Someone gets badly burned on their hand. Later in the movie, Indy has a long fist fight with a dude while Marion kills Nazis with a plane's machine gun. A little later the plane is getting ready for takeoff and while it is launching, the rotor rips open a man's head, but it doesn't show anything violent. It just shows a lot of blood splatters, I mean a LOT. But so far, the movie still has the right to be PG rated and is still pretty family friendly for ages 10+. But then the end scene comes. SPOILER (When the Nazis open up the ark, the movie's tone changes fast. These ghosts fly out and Indy tells Marion to keep her eyes closed. But it's also a warning to the viewers, what's coming up is intense. The ghosts turn dark and disturbing, and they shoot lightning beams at all of the Nazis, except for 3, oh HO HO, those three are being saved for last... After the others are dead, the fun really begins.) Someone's face melts in a disturbing way, but what comes next is way worse. It shows someone face melt down to the skull, blood and all. It's still violent even for nowadays standards (I think). This is the kind of stuff reserved for R rated films. Then, A man's head explodes, but it is partially covered by a wall of fire just to dodge the R rating. Remember, PG-13 didn't exist at this time, so it's either PG, or R. Lots of kids will be able to handle this but lots of kids won't be. The end scene is jarring because the movie so far has been pretty tame violence wise, compared to this level of gore. You definitely wouldn't see it coming a mile away. For language there are uses of goddamn, hell, bastard, damn and "oh my god". There is also one use of holy s--t. For Sex, Romance, and Nudity, there is kissing and flirting, implied sex between 2 main characters, Indy shown shirtless getting out of bed. Marion kidnapped and forced to change into revealing dress. Bare back shown as man watches her. For drinking/drugs/smoking there is a drinking content to see who can take the most shots before falling asleep, I think. This is done multiple times. Other scenes of wine and drinking. Overall this is a great movie to watch with either mature tweens, or young teens. Or just skip the end scene all together, though it may be a little anti-climactic for the big ending to be just pausing and forwarding, then just saying " The Nazis got what they deserved" or something. Best to wait to see this classic until they are old enough or mature enough to see it all the way through.
