As we watched I got involved with the characters and plot. I was excited at the exciting parts, happy at the happy parts, and felt pretty bad when Pi was lost at sea with a carnivore. I found myself totally engrossed in the movie, thinking it was great...until the end. Which I must say was really disturbing. Like REALLY disturbing. Spoilers ahead. Turn back now if you don’t want to see them. It turns out that the zebra, hyena, orangutang and tiger weren't really there. Pi temporarily went insane. So, the hyena ate the zebra, and then the monkey, and then the tiger ate the hyena. According to Pi’s “other” version of the story, the hyena was the cook, the zebra the Japanese sailor, and the ape was Pi's mother (who we thought had died). Pi was the tiger. So the cook, sailor, Pi and his mom all escaped on the boat. The cook kills the sailor, Pi’s mom tries to stop him and the cook kills her. Pi freaks out and somehow a sixteen year-old boy overpowers a full grown man, and Pi kills the sailor in self-defence. Then Pi couldn’t handle the horrific memory so his mind changed them into animals. Logic follows that if this is true, the entire time Pi was with the tiger and talking to it and feeding it and catching meerkats for it, the tiger wasn’t there and Pi was alone. My advice is don’t over think this because it’s just really weird. In the end I decided that since Pi said that you can believe either version, I’ll stick with the animals. (Also, I tested whether or not bananas float in water, and they do.)

The hyena also attempts to do this to the orangutan and, sadly, succeeds. The tiger then comes out of hiding and kills the hyena and eats all the animals. Pi had been sitting on the top of the boat watching all of this in horror. Later he will refer to them as his mother (the orangutan), the zebra (a sailor with a broken leg), the hyena (the cook), and Richard Parker, the tiger, (Pi himself), where the same thing happened just with humans, to two inquiring minds that work for the company that ran and owned the ship trying to figure out how the ship sank. I personally prefer the version where Pi eventually befriends the tiger. The story progresses and Pi trains the tiger and does see a ship (maybe a mirage) and uses three flares to try to attract the ships attention. Needless to say, it doesn’t work. He kills and eats some fish, winds up on a breathing island that kills things in the water after dark and had the remains of a previous human (a tooth). Pi also kills some of the meerkats of the island for Richard Parker. There is another big storm where Pi almost killed himself and Richard Parker. All of this happens and he eventually winds up in Mexico after a really long time. Richard Parker leaves and doesn’t even look back (crushed my heart by the way). Again great movie (also you might need to explain an open ending to your kids). I honestly think this movie should be PG-13 because of the implied cannibalism (cook eats sailor, cook kills mother, Pi kills cook, Pi eats all of them) and the cussing but you know things are starting to become more common like cussing and violence that maybe for modern times it is PG. Just make sure the kids don’t become desensitized to these kind of events. Please enjoy!
