If you plan on watching it with your child, skipping through violence or racy scenes is pointless because of how frequent they are. Just be careful, but if your a teen or an adult, don’t let the first half of season 1 fool you into thinking it’s for kids, the writing quickly gets dark.

After dealing with the shock of that (I personally was shocked), I figured we might as well stick with it but with hindsight, I might have left off Clone Wars for another year or so. But, having said that, here in the UK, children start learning about WW1 from the age of around 5/6. The ideas of battle and death should be familiar to them. And I do think this is (genuinely) one of the better portrayals of war I have seen on screen. It's long, it's complicated, a LOT of people die, civilians die, heroes die. They fight over many planets, with different environments, there are many different races. There are different challenges, there is subterfuge, there is politics, there is war profiteering. People make mistakes and have to account for themselves. Consequences are dealt with. In particular, the concept of the clone troopers and how they are grown to fight and die raises a lot of philosophical questions. I was genuinely surprised by how much my children "got" this. They have a great deal of empathy with the clones. Another episode looks very seriously at non-violence and whether the Jedi are hypocrites for "taking sides". The one thing I don't like about some of the earlier seasons is the portrayal of some female characters, in particular their clothing. Ahsoka, one of the central characters spends the first two seasons wearing a mini skirt (with leggings) and a boob tube. This is one the kids didn't really notice until she appears in S3 with much more practical attire. However, often other incidental female characters are depicted wearing very little alongside males dressed very "practically". Think Jabba the Hutt's dancing slave girl in Return of the Jedi. Just how bad that is depends on your point of view but it's bad enough that you'll notice if you pay attention to these things. However, overall, there are a lot of good role models (for boys and girls) and some genuinely great messages.

Even racism exists in this show as some of the clones use names for non-human species that sound rather derogatory. There is plenty of drinking, whether it is being done by bounty hunters and pirates or clones and jedis. Like anything Star Wars of course there is violence, but I don’t believe it is any worse than anything in the movies. Slavery is also brought up as is terrorism. Of course the whole show revolves around war and there is legitimate debate about the evils of war as well as war profiteering. There are also many disturbing scenes on Dathomir with the Nightsisters, Asajj Ventress, Savage Opress, Darth Maul, and ghosts. Betrayal is also a common element in this show, and none is worse than what happens to Asoka at the end of season 5. The show is highly enjoyable, and I look forward to the final season coming out which is a few weeks away. However, despite this being a cartoon, I would never show it to a young child, the movies are much more appropriate for younger kids than this.

So, I would not shy anyone away from watching this show when you are young, unless you really can't take the violence that is constant throughout this show (no blood of course, and mostly the killing of droids, but there are still many many human deaths that are visible throughout the entire show, almost every episode), but I do implore you to watch the show again when you are older, I would say 17 at least, so you can catch on to the more subtle aspects. Overall, not even being a complete Star Wars stan, I have to say this is one of my favorite shows of all time. It really bridges the gap between adolescent and adult media, and does it in the most perfect way. I would reccomend anyone of any age to watch this, above a certain point of course. Thats all I have to say.
