That was all good to see and hear. Second, the movie starts off pretty creepy. Its Halloween time in their home town, and Marshall is trying to help his best friend Gil face his fears, including a cheesy horror movie and door-bell ditching the neighborhood creepy haunted house owned by a mysterious and cranky antique dealer, Kubot (jump scares!). Aspiring journalist and new-girl to town Amy joins the crew and they go snooping into the creepy basement and uncover a mummy in a dark, damp, and spooky basement. The mummy is pretty scary looking and angry sounding and chases the trio of kids around the house (MORE JUMP SCARES ABOUND!!). This is where the movie just turns into fun time family adventure. The mummy turns out to be very friendly and kind of silly, with slapstick interactions in a 21st century home and neighborhood (shenanigans!). And the trio of kids befriend the mummy and try their best to keep him safe, return him to the natural history museum, and help him (the mummy) reunite with his true love (its cute). For me and my family, jump scares are better than anything too macabre. I have found jump scares are fun and lively but aren't the kind of thing that lead to nightmares. The villains (Kubot the antique dealer, his two henchmen goons, and their financier) are a bit over-the-top and cartoon-ish in their performance, which is perfect for the family. Complicated villains stick into our brains a lot more. These are straight forward no-doubt-about-it "bad guys." The beginning is a bit scary, but not too bad and it turns a corner. There is a school bully that gets pushed back upon, which is good to see. Some groans and eye-rolling around a love of learning at school, which is kind of annoying. The villain is ridiculous which is good. A lot of good diverse representation and messages about overcoming fears, bonding across differences, and sticking with our friends. Overall, a great movie to fill in the gap between kid's Halloween movies (Curious George, Pooh's Heffalump Movie, Wallace & Gromit, Hotel Transylvania, etc.) and true tween Halloween movies (1990s Addams Family, Hocus Pocus, Goosebumps, etc.). Definitely recommend!
