一个完美的日场。

It's rare that I want a movie to be longer, but this is one of those rare examples. I'm starting to think that Clint Eastwood just can't pace stuff that well. Chris Kyle and his wife are the only ones with discernible personalities, and that's mostly in part to Cooper and Miller's performances. His kids are just cute little kids and his comrades at war just make little jokes that soldiers typically would. Also in regards to writing, I just don't understand why screenwriters are so hell bent on putting things in non-chronological order. It can totally work: Gone Girl used it to play with our expectations, Wild used it because we were learning about the protagonist as she learned about herself, and We Need to Talk About Kevin used it to illustrate the protagonist's fractured state of mind and self-doubt. The only reason that I can think about it here is that they wanted to make the story appear more interesting than its script actually makes it. It's kind of like the wrote it in a linear fashion and then rearranged stuff just for giggles. Without spoiling anything, the ending was a mixed bag for me. When it started it to end, I was intrigued by the themes being presented and what Cooper's character was going through, and then it just ends. It doesn't even show what actually happens with Chris Kyle, using the words-to-say-what-happened-to-a-real-person-after-the-movie-ends tactic to the nth degree. It totally undercuts the emotional response that that the filmmakers are building for the entire film. Overall, I was simultaneously underwhelmed and perfectly "whelmed" since the movie had much more potential than it actually demonstrates, while part of me also wasn't expecting a lot more than awards season biopic material. If only they would actually go above and beyond, but that's not really the case here. I guess they succeeded in getting a shit-ton of Oscar nominations, though. 6.3/10, okay, one thumb down, average, etc.

The material is there, but it isn't like it was solidified. I can't call the script bad, it just feels incomplete. What I can call bad, however, is Christoph Waltz's performance, shockingly enough. I love Waltz; he's terrific in movies like Django Unchained, is very charismatic, and I'm very excited for him to play the villain in Spectre. So, what the hell was he doing here? The direction may have something to do with it--I'm not sure--but he undoubtably is mostly at fault here. Before I start, I want to say that I understand that he's playing a real person, and a despicable person, at that. I was a person that defended audiences' criticisms against Emma Watson's brilliant performance in The Bling Ring. People didn't like her annoying valley girl accent, but she was playing an annoying valley girl. Her verbalized thoughts were superficial and glossy, but so was the real person. Waltz's problem in Big Eyes is that he is terribly hammy. He does three things: yells and waves his hands in the air, convulses his upper body and talks quickly, or slowly talks around with a smug smile. The last one could work, but he constantly is a characterture, not a character. A character's shallowness can show depth, but it really does nothing positive here, and I'm truly shocked that he got a Golden Globe nomination for this. (But, again, it is the Golden Globes...) Other than the script and Waltz's performance, I didn't really get anything from Big Eyes. Tim Burton's direction is okay and Amy Adams does a good job. The movie looks good--the colors and cinematography make the film itself look like a painting at times--but if you're hoping for a female-empowering story, you actually won't get much of it. 5.2/10, meh, two thumbs down, below average, etc.

That's around when the second act should have ended, but it instead thickens plot points and makes things more complicated, neither in a quite entertaining manner. I would say that there were a good twenty minutes where I was bored; the rest of the time in question just wasn't quite that necessary. A Most Violent Year isn't a movie that was "snubbed" at the Oscars, per se, other than Chastain's supporting work. It isn't as good as Chandor's previous movie All Is Lost, but its themes and questions that it raises are intriguing and its script is well written for about the first 60% of the movie's runtime. 7.8/10, solid, one thumb up, above average, etc.

However, even these solid aspects are bogged down by a script and overall plot that's near-incomprehensible. There's a difference between challenging movies and frustrating movies, and this movie fits into the latter. It's not that it's reasonably complex, it's desperately complex. I remember a year ago when some people said that American Hustle became too contrived towards the end, but this is like that times twenty. Pair that with the 148-minute runtime, and this becomes a sort of chore to sit through, save for the occasional glimmers of solid humor. I do want to say this, though: the screening that I went to seemed to elicit a noticeable difference of reactions. There were two groups of people scattered throughout the packed crowd, one school laughing throughout and clapping at the end, and the other school really liking it at the beginning, only to grow antsy and bored. The stranger that sat next to me left the auditorium four times when he wasn't twiddling his thumbs for the latter half of the movie. I personally didn't know which opinion I'd have about this, but I know that a fair amount of people will know what they'll think of it before they see it. I tried to stay away from reviews and plot synopses that weren't in the trailers, so I didn't know a whole lot, personally. It's not like this pissed me off, but it definitely disappointed me. 4.7/10, lame, two thumbs down, below average, etc.

It's a very well constructed movie with a great lead performance (despite its running time being about ten minutes too long), but I don't think that this will stick with me for a while to come. 8.2/10, very good, one thumb up, above average, etc.

Hypothetically, I would be open to seeing this again since it is truly entertaining and weird, and if you see it, the 3D is worth it. There may not being things assertively flying at your face, but the entire movie has an immersive depth to it, even when it's its traditional hand-drawn style of animation. 8/10, really good, one thumb up, above average, etc.
